I agree with you very much, Anon! Obviously it isn’t ideal, but the fact of the matter is, we have choices to make, especially those of us who work in restaurant settings. When you’re young, finding jobs that AREN’T in food service is just fucking hard. But what the hell are you supposed to do? Money is a fact of life. In America, it’s a fact of survival. There’s a difference between slaughtering animals on factory farms for money (which WOULD be hypocritical) and having to cook California burgers and chicken satay every other weekend for money.
Because of me, my cafe now has a vegan burger option for those nights. Our satay sauce is not only allergen-free (made from sesame seeds), but it’s also vegan. I’ve made vegan scones and cookies there before and people raved about them. Our wheat and ciabatta breads are vegan. We have vegan chili EVERY DAY and tons of people get it. We have soy milk. All of our salad dressings are vegan. I’ve rearranged our food drawers so that no dairy allergens can potentially contaminate the vegan foods. I sometimes make a vegan French toast special. I’ve gotten several of my coworkers to stop eating meat entirely.
What people need to understand is that every day, we vote vegan or not-vegan. We vote with our money. When I take the money I earn at the cafe and go grocery shopping for all vegan products and produce, I’m voting for vegan. This is the language companies knows: supply and demand.
Thank you for the support, Anon. <3
