What is protein? It is a family of amino acid molecules your body needs for the growth, maintenance and repair of all cells; is a major component of all muscles, tissues and organs; is vital for the metabolism, digestion and the transportation of nutrients and oxygen in the blood; it is necessary for the production of antibodies which fight against infection and illnesses; and is the main nutrient that keeps our hair shiny and healthy, our nails strong, our skin fresh and glowing and our bodies strong and healthy.

There are two types of proteins, complete and incomplete proteins. “Complete” proteins have all 8 essential amino acids (the ninth amino acid is only required during infancy and childhood) and tend to come from animal sources of protein such as meat, dairy products, eggs, fish, shellfish and poultry. ”Incomplete” proteins are usually lacking in one or more of the essential amino acids  and come from plant sources like fruits, vegetables, pulses, grains and nuts. However, soy foods contain all the essential amino acids in the amounts our bodies need.

There are several advantages to eating plant protein:

  • Plant protein does not contain any cholesterol or saturated fats.
  • Plant protein is rich in antioxidants, calcium, zinc, and other minerals and vitamins.
  • Plant protein is high in fibre.

“It is very easy for a vegan diet to meet the recommendations for protein, as long as calorie intake is adequate. Strict protein combining is not necessary; it is more important to eat a varied diet throughout the day.” – Reed Mangels, Ph.D., R.D.; Vegetarian Resource Group, VRG.org

No, actually, cows do not need to be milked. After they give birth to their calves, cows’ calves drink their milk.

Oh, wait, we’re talking about the dairy industry. So, no, the calves are taken away from their mothers, given nutritionally inadequate milk replacements and then slaughtered and…

This is a sign sitting right by the grill area in my apartment complex in Dallas! It makes me so happy to think that everyone going to grill a steak sees this!

Totally awesome that this is up there, but while most of these are top-notch, I sort of take issue with 7 & 8. I think there are better ways those could be worded and combined.

Non-Vegan: “If you are vegan, then how do you get protein?!?!”

Vegan: “Well, your body produces most of the amino acids (which make up protein) it needs. Except for 8 amino acids, which you must consume to survive- which are in all foods. So, every fruit, vegetable, nut, has enough protein in it-…

Keen-what? Keen-Wah!

*spelled quinoa

Quinoa is a seed that once cooked, has a delicious, fluffy, slightly crunchy, and almost nutty flavor.

Along with the yummy taste, check out some of the benefits:

  • Trying to up your protein intake? Hello?! Try some quinoa! Not only is it a super good source of protein…but the protein it supplies is complete protein! This means that it includes all 9 amino acids! Hooray!
  • Migraines? You might want to think about adding quinoa into your life! The magnesium in quinoa relaxes your blood vessels, which will help reduce those achy migraines!
  • Quinoa prevents against lots of probelms too! Heart disease, childhood asthma, breast cancer, gallstones, cardiovascular health and so many more!

These are only a few of quinoa’s benefits! So considering how easy it is to add into your life, there’s really no reason not to include it! Add it to your salad, throw it in a wrap, eat it with your stir fry…anything!

Now go get some! :)

*This is not my photo, but I searched and couldn’t find the source, if I do…I’ll be sure to add it!
Also it’s fucking yummy and you can totally use it instead of oats for breakfast. Or a snack. Or pretty much any time.

Always reblog this. A lot of the animals they kill (and they kill over 95% of the animals they take in at their Virginia Headquarters) are killed within 24 hours. Not nearly enough time to deem whether an animal is adoptable or not. They even bought a giant fridge to store the corpses!
PETA is a corporation. Not a charity.  Less than 1% of their 32 Million+ annual budget actually goes to directly helping animals. Most of it is spent making sexist/racist/ domestic abuse supporting commercials that won’t even air on television, giving bail outs to convicted arsonists and criminals, hiring/supporting any celebrity that claims to be vegetarian for five minutes, creating campaigns to target children (“Your mom kills animals”), fruitless lawsuits like suing Sea World for violating the constitution, and most recently, making porn. I’m not against porn, but I fail to see how it helps animals.
PETA does not give a care about animals.
Plus, these guys have the gall to insult Steve Irwin.

PETA: we pretend to love animals, but all we really love is money.

i’ve tried so many times to tell people that PETA are the worst animal protection organization but they just don’t believe me

FUCK PETA, support the ASPCA & try to live a healthy, organic lifestyle :)
